Mapping the Factory's Nerves: A Look at the Industrial Communication Market Share

The global market for industrial communication is a highly concentrated and strategic space, with the Industrial Communication Market Share being dominated by a small number of very large, global industrial automation giants. These companies have built their dominant positions over many decades by providing a complete, integrated portfolio of automation solutions, from the PLCs and drives to the communication network that connects them all. Leadership in this market is not just about selling a switch or a cable; it's about owning the entire automation ecosystem. The major players have each developed and championed their own industrial communication protocols, and they leverage their massive installed base of control systems to drive the adoption of their own networking hardware. The competitive landscape is a global battle between these major automation titans, primarily from Europe, the U.S., and Japan, each with their own loyal customer base and a deeply entrenched ecosystem of products and partners.

The European giants, particularly from Germany, hold a massive share of the global market. Siemens is a dominant force and a clear market leader in many regions. Their market share is built on the immense popularity of their Simatic line of PLCs and their championing of the PROFIBUS and, more recently, the PROFINET industrial communication standards. PROFINET is one of the world's leading Industrial Ethernet protocols, and Siemens' dominant position in the PLC market gives them a powerful advantage in selling the PROFINET-compatible switches, cables, and other network components that are needed to build a complete Siemens automation solution. Other major European players include Schneider Electric, which also has a broad portfolio of automation products and supports a range of protocols including Modbus-TCP and EtherNet/IP, and Beckhoff, which is the primary driver behind the high-performance EtherCAT protocol, another major Industrial Ethernet standard, particularly in high-speed machine control applications.

From the United States, the primary player is Rockwell Automation, with its Allen-Bradley brand. Rockwell is a dominant force in the North American automation market and has a significant global presence. Their market share is built around their ControlLogix and CompactLogix family of PLCs and their championing of the EtherNet/IP protocol. EtherNet/IP, which is managed by the ODVA industry association, is another of the world's leading Industrial Ethernet standards and is the primary competitor to PROFINET. Like Siemens, Rockwell's strength lies in its ability to offer a complete, integrated architecture from a single vendor, and its large installed base of controllers drives the sales of its Stratix line of Industrial Ethernet switches (which are often co-developed with Cisco) and other network components. The competition between the ecosystems of Siemens/PROFINET and Rockwell/EtherNet/IP is a defining feature of the industrial communication landscape.

Beyond the major automation giants, the market also includes a number of other important players. In Japan, companies like Mitsubishi Electric and Omron are major automation vendors with a strong position in the Asian market and their own preferred networking standards (such as CC-Link IE). The market for the physical hardware, particularly the Industrial Ethernet switches, also includes a number of specialized networking companies. Companies like Hirschmann (owned by Belden), Moxa, and Phoenix Contact are major players who specialize in manufacturing a wide range of high-quality, ruggedized industrial networking hardware that supports all of the major industrial protocols. While they do not have their own PLC ecosystem, they compete on the basis of their deep networking expertise and the breadth and quality of their hardware portfolio. The market is a complex interplay between the large automation vendors who drive the protocol standards and the specialized hardware vendors who provide the components to build out the network.
